Where do you find the time? I don’t know how you do it. Just a snippet of the statements I hear from people when they are lacking the time to do the things they want to… Be more creative! This is why I am writing this for you now, as I have 8 Ways to Make More Creative Time.

I have been creative my entire life and the crafts of choice have altered over this time but one of my constants that I always fall back to is sewing. Specifically hand sewing, something I can do on an evening while chilling with the family.

The types of hand sewing have altered for me over the years, where in my younger years I used to cross stitch, sew teddies from kits, I now focus on sewing my own ideas. Patchwork techniques and hand quilting allow me to have a little bit more freedom to use my own creativity. Paired with my now found love of embroidery I can do anything I want.

I have been working on this Make Time embroidery/patchwork piece for my office wall. It’s a small part of a bigger project! It’s inspired by the Make Time Community a crafty place to connect with other like minded crafters.

Before we launch into the 8 Ways to Make More Creative Time we need to look at the things that might be stopping you…

What Gets in my way

This list could be endless, but I am sticking to the core 5 things that have stopped me from getting my creative time….

    • Social Media – the endless scroll – Hands up who gets zapped into Facebook.

    • Other People – whether you are Mum or Carer there is always someone that can by vying for your attention!

    • Chores – there is always something round the house that needs doing!

    • Work – we need to earn a living after all! Those electricity bills won’t pay themselves.

    • Me – Yes YOU! You might not think you are good enough to even start.

By Looking at a few of the problems that stop us getting that creative time, we can hopefully understand what might need to change

8 Ways to Make More Creative Time

    1. Wake up 30 minutes earlier (I know!) and use that time for your creative pursuit.
    2. Use a Creative outlet you can do while doing your usual routines – listen to a play or a podcast.
    3. Get the people you are looking after involved so everyone is benefiting from creating.
    4. Choose a small project that doesn’t take up much time, space or money. 10-15 minutes a day is all you need!
    5. Work out where you are loosing time? Social media?? Swap this time for your new creative outlet.
    6. Say no to the next thing someone asks you to do so you can create instead!
    7. Get Support – tell others in your life that this is what you are going to do and ask them to pick up something off your list!
    8. Look for opportunities to work on your creativity when you are in the outside world!

I have a very understanding partner, he knows that sewing and being creative is something that I need in my life. If I want to use the sewing machine upstairs he will be happy to look after the kids. He knows that the pile of sewing projects stacked up in the corner of the room is my happy place.

The kids enjoy being creative too, one of our go to crafting projects is simply colouring in, you can see this in Handmade with Love. Because I sew around them, they have fascination and inclination to learn to sew too. Everyone benefits from me wanting to be more creative!!

Have I missed anything? What ways do you fit creativity into your life?
