I really got hit with the Blue Monday blues this past week, hormones and weather really like to drag you down. I think I’m out the other side of it now but it made me realise how much I rely on the crafting projects that I have that I do just for the sake of it! The daily creativity that drives my every day need that if I miss many days I really feel the loss.

So in the spirit of creativity I thought why not share with you a couple of the projects that I have been working on for the sake of it. The ones that don’t have a deadline, the ones that I enjoy to make just because I enjoy the process.

The Liberty Flower Collection

I have been collecting 2.5″ Liberty Fabric squares for a couple of years now and I turn them into Hexagon Flowers using English Paper Piecing. I have no reason other than I love to make hexies and love the feel of Liberty Fabric.

A Collection of Liberty fabric Hexagon Flowers - the colour of the rainbow

If I ever feel low this is what I reach for the most. My total count is 87 flowers as of Jan 23, I really don’t have big plan for them yet, but I think I am getting close to an idea. Can you tell that I have got a rainbow feel going on for it!?

Definitely a Quilt top yes, but layout how?! I’ll have to do some hexie flower research! I do worry though that if I suddenly stop my flower collection to try and actually make something with them that I might lose the sense of “for the sake of it!” Although having a slow hand quilting project too is also appealing!

The Focus Cutting Sewalong

The Focus Cutting Sewalong has weaved in my world the last 5 years, from when I first found my love of the hexagon in the first year of the sew along hosted by Naomi Clarke over on Instagram. If you haven’t seen that quilt I suggest you do! It was a slow progress all hand sewn I-Spy hexie quilt that took about 3 years to make but it was a joy to connect with all the lovely makers on Instagram while I was sewing it!

This years shape is the honey comb and it wasn’t until someone pointed out to me that it it is still a hexagon, just squished, that I realised why I like it so much! Again I have now plan but I enjoy picking up the challenge at the start of the year to see how it feels.

Over the past 2 years I have crashed out in March but I’m always optimistic that I will make the year! I’ve completed 3 out of the 5 years!

4 red fabric crosses made from honeycomb shapes

In 2020 we had the year of the house shape and I made them very tiny and into a cushion. This is a very similar shape to the house, making a cross. I had made the house versions tiny, they were just over a cm long, this honey comb shape is a about 2.5cm from tip to tip, a bit more manageable for me!

I’ve already started to love this project and it’s currently my evening sew project, I might have made more than 4 since starting writing this blog!

So, Just for the sake of it!

For no other real reason, just creating for the sake of it! How many projects have you got as your go to projects? I know I’ve only picked 2 here of the list of many projects that I have still to work on but looking back over the past couple of weeks, these are my top reach!

Nobody needs an excuse to be creative, just do it!

Do you want to have more time to be creative?

I am passionate that everyone should have a daily creative pursuit, in whatever that means to them.  I don’t mean works of art everyday, it could be a little bit of sewing, some colouring in, listening to the radio or your favourite songs.  If you would like to learn more about the subject of finding creativity in the tiniest of places, come and join the community.

See you there, Karen x
