Wow, I can’t quite believe I’ve never found time to share my very first quilt. A time before I found the pleasures of the quilt community on Instagram, a time before I knew using the sewing machine (which I did own!) would be easier. A time before understanding that smaller would have been easier for a first attempt.

My very first quilt is all completely hand sewn from the patchwork to the quilting and is whopping king sized quilt. It took a good 2 years to make back in and around 2009 – 2011. Here it is:

I didn’t even visit a quilt shop untill I needed the wadding for the inside. The material is from an old kids bed sheet that I found in a charity shop. It had colourful stripes all down the back and it was these stripes I turned into squares, with scissors, no rotary blade or ruler in sight!! I don’t even think I followed a pattern I just decided to make a nine patch block with all the bits and then I decided what to do next.

It was a fantastic project to do and one that created my love of patchwork quilting, although it was a fair few years until I found the world of instagram quilters! I made a few quilts for friends after this with the sewing machine.

I really loved cuddling under this quilt and it has been a firm favourite with my son and I love this picture of him cuddling with my very first quilt!

What I didn’t realise at the time was that I was creating a 9 patch quilt block!  To me it just felt natural to sew these strips and squares together, no real plan other than I had the old fabric and I was joining the together.  It was an absolubte pleasure to make!
