Getting used to life in the Summer Holidays is always on the edge of enjoyment plus overwhelm. Truly looking forward to spending time with the kids but also surviving what seems like the never ending groundhog day of daily adventure, snacks and young people demands.  The last week has been true immersion though as we’ve been Holidaying in Wales and an unsuspecting Kaffe Twist!

Holidaying in Wales

We took ourselves off to Barmouth in Wales this last week gone and it’s been such a great break from the Summer Holidays.  A holiday within the holidays.  The campsite we were at is 100 meters from the beach and we took all of the opportunities that there was to spend time on it.

beach castles

We walked up and down the prom at Barmouth most days, forgetting to tell the kids until the last day that we could have driven into town.  I think our largest walk day was 6.6 miles and considering the little is only 5 I am very impressed at their walking efforts!

Mr Tiny often says that they can do it and I’m blown away that they can, with very little complaint.  The lure of the beach is high for the kids when we’re there, digging holes, building castles and dams of water, every kids dream day!

The castle that I am most proud of is this one here though. It had all the defences, moats, stone walls, ditches and more.  It’ll have been washed away in high tide 2 hours later.  A great Mum and son project to take part in when he woke up in my “early time” and didn’t stop talking.  6.30am on the beach to dig!!

Always Time for Make Time

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the beach, taking time out to be creative and play with the children.  We were very surprised that the sea was quite warm to play and swim in and made the most of being able to do that.  What I did enjoy the most though was the find on the first day from the tiny people.

We love searching for and collecting interesting pebbles on the beach and we often pick up and pocket them and deposit them elsewhere normally.  My eldest came running up to me shouting, I’ve found rainbow rocks! Unsure of what he meant I carried on listening as we love rainbows in this house…

He did, a great set of pebbles in the colour of a rainbow, sort of.

It being the challenge of the month word “rainbow” in Make Time this month, I had to take a picture to share in there.  Every month I set a new non compulsory challenge to make something in their chosen craft based on that word.

I use a lot of rainbow inspired things in my craft so with the kids on board too they helped me lay out, photo and edit these rocks!

Grabbing my Early Time

I am a huge believer that when on holiday that it’s my holiday too so I always take some hand sewing, a book and carve out that little bit of me time.  The best time for me to do that is first thing in the morning, my early time!  After what is inevitably a short night sleep on the floor of the tent, my back normally gives way and I just want to get up and sit in a chair for a bit.  Any time around 6am usually.

With our black out inner tent the kids usually sleep in till about 7.30 – 8am giving me an hour to sit and read or sew.  I have mainly been working on my Beaufort Quilt, doing some hand English Paper Piecing of these beautiful flowers, ready to applique to some more diamonds soon:

An Unsuspecting Kaffe Twist

On our adventures home we stayed at a Youth Hostel in Ironbridge, on the way we called into Powis Castle a National Trust place on near the border between Wales and England.   We often visit new National Trusts and they can have a habit of being samey, I was in a for a tiny surprise when we arrived.

Powis Castle is home of the Kaffe Fassett exhibition inspired by his latest book Quilts in Wales –  spread all around the castle and absolutely gorgeous!

I couldn’t take many photos as we weren’t allowed to flash but I snapped this one on the stairs

All in all it was a very special holiday and one that I’ll treasure for the months to come.  I’m going to carry on stitching during the summer and I’ll see you in September!
