Over the years, red, white, and blue have found their way into many of my projects, not just because of their striking contrast, but also for the sense of celebration they bring. A few were created around the Platinum Jubilee but some have just been because these were the colours that dominated my fabric stash!
Today, I wanted to take a look back and share some of my favourite projects that have featured this combination. There’s even an unfinished piece that I keep meaning to complete. It’s too cute not to share!
My Marcelle Medallion Quilt
This Marcelle Medallion Quilt was probably one of my biggest learning curve quilt and I learnt a lot doing it. It’s also the one that because it’s not perfect has been the one that is most used in the house. It’s used and abused by the kids and has been the quilt I’ve made that’s been through the wash the most!!
I’d been gifted a lot of blue and red floral fabrics that swung my decision on using red white and blue. When you have 2 bundle of fat quarters then you just need to use them!! My first attempts at Foundation Paper Piecing and Free Motion Quilting!! Here’s the blog post.
English Paper Pieced crowns
With lots of parties back in the Platinum Jubilee, it seemed fitting to make an English Paper Pieced crown inspired by the red, white, and blue theme. The cups of tea and all the plain fabrics that frame them just sing. I got a lot of compliments at parties and was a joy to make
The English paper crowns are my own sewing pattern and you can have a lot of fun with them. If you love this one and want some other inspiration there is a round up of all the crowns I have ever made, loads of possibilities and fun!
The Platinum Jubilee Quilt Block
There is nothing more fun than participating in a group quilt and I’ve done a couple over the years. It was an absolute pleasure to join in with Suzanne Campion and Leisa White in helping make gorgeous Platinum Jubilee community quilt and was made by lots of quilters all over the UK and USA.
Using Liberty London Tana Lawn fabrics in red white and blue, we were asked to make a hexie block to be added to a final quilt. It was a challenge to find enough of my Liberty fabric to make a big block like this. I had to buy some white in! It was fun to make something a little bigger for a change but it totally inspired another project which I’ll tell you about in a moment! Here is the final quilt.
The Tiny Hexie Jubilee Panel
After making the bigger block for the Jubilee community quilt I had a desire to make something on my own. The Tiny Hexie Jubilee Panel was born and is the project I need to pull out and finish.
Using One Inch hexie papers and drawing on them I was able to recreate the bigger block in tiny. I’ve mixed up different style hexie designs to create a red white and blue panel. I have every intention to turn this into a large forager bag but just need to get on with it!!
Fussy Cutting Sew-Along Hexie Block
Not really a full project I decided to include this Focus Cutting Sewalong 2023 block that I made, it was a year of using the 1″ hexies like above and I used a union jack flag to create this one. I’ve lots of fun in the Focus Cutting Sewalong community in the past so I figured I’d share it!
Liberty Carnaby Tiny House Book
I can’t believe I almost forgot this Tiny House Book to include in the blog! In Liberty Carnaby fabrics that I had won in a competition I used exclusively these fabrics. It is one of my most favourite books that I have since gifted to my littlest niece.
When you go down the rabbit hole of using a certain fabric range for a Tiny House Book it makes a really good effect at the end! Here’s a link
Looking back at all of these projects, I’m reminded of how much creativity these colours have inspired in me over the years. From celebrating national events like the Platinum Jubilee to simply experimenting with new techniques. Red, white, and blue have been a constant source of inspiration.
Have you worked with red, white, and blue in your projects? I’d love to hear about them!
